How to Wash a Graphic T-Shirt So the Print Doesn't Crack

How to wash a graphic t-shirt step by step

  1. Turn the t-shirt inside out so the print is protected from friction.
  2. Wash in cold water, around 30°C, on a gentle cycle.
  3. Use a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
  4. Do not tumble dry. Hang in the shade, away from direct sunlight.
  5. If you need to iron, turn it inside out, use low heat and never press directly on the print.

Washing less often also helps. Spot-clean light marks and wash the tee after every few wears.

How to stop black t-shirts from fading

Wash black tees inside out in cold water with a detergent made for darks, avoid over-washing, and dry them in the shade. Direct sun and hot water fade black dye fastest.

  • Wash with other dark colours.
  • Use cold water and a gentle cycle.
  • Avoid long soaks and harsh detergents.
  • Dry away from direct sunlight.

Heavyweight cotton generally holds its colour well when it is cared for this way.

Why this routine works

Heat and friction are what crack prints and fade dye. Cold water, washing inside out and shade drying remove both. The same habits also protect the fit: see Do heavyweight oversized t-shirts shrink?
